Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP) – Who is it for and what are the benefits?

The Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP) is by far the most comprehensive, cost effective and stress-free visa you can apply for. Overall, it will save you countless hours of travel, money, stress and time – making the KITAP the number one option for expatriates living within Indonesia.

Being the most comprehensive visa, also makes it one of the hardest visas to attain. In this article we will help explain the different ways you can obtain one and include some useful tips that could help you spend more time doing the things that you love and less time stressing about your visa.

Firstly, what is a Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP)?

Simply put, the Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP) is a permanent stay permit which allows the recipient to stay in Indonesia for 5 years at a time. Unlike the KITAS, which is a yearly permit; by obtaining a KITAP you will no longer be required to make annual trips to the immigration office or spend months going through paper work every year.

What are the benefits of having a Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP)?

The obvious benefit of possessing a KITAP is that you do not need to consistently apply for a visa every year; additionally, you can also apply/obtain the following:

Indonesian ID (with a 5-year validity)
You can enter the country and exit freely for 2 years
Obtain a local driver’s license (with a 5-year validity)
You can open bank accounts, get a credit card or take a loan
You can pay local prices at attractions, rather than paying tourist prices
Finally, you qualify for ownership of real estate

Who can apply for a KITAP?

Because the KITAP is the most exclusive form of visa, not everyone can apply for it; however, there are a variety of ways you can obtain one:

Foreigners who are married to an Indonesian spouse
Foreigners that would like to retire in Indonesia
Indonesia citizens who are regaining their citizenship.
Foreign Investors, Directors or Commissioners in an Indonesian Company (PT PMA) that have worked in the same company for at least 4 years

Lets look into more details about each option, the requirements and any additional information worth noting:

Spouse Sponsored KITAP

If you are married to an Indonesian citizen you can apply for a KITAP, however you will not be able to apply directly for the visa until you have been married for 2 years.

Despite the fact you may have the marriage certification, that does not mean you are automatically entitled to receive the visa or permanently live in Indonesia.

There are two paths to obtaining the KITAP from this scenario, the first being that, after you are married, you gain a spouse visa which is sponsored by your spouse, alternatively you can apply for a KITAS.

As we mentioned previously, either way, you are still required to do this process for 2 consecutive years prior to applying for the KITAP.

If you have already been married for 2 years or more you can apply for a KITAP directly after getting your spouse KITAS, meaning you will not need to extend your visa twice.

Retirement KITAP

For most people leaving the doom and gloom of their countries and retiring in an island paradise is the ideal way to spend your twilight years (and who can blame them).

To apply for a retirement KITAP, the core requirement is age. To obtain a retirement KITAP, you must be above 55 years of age and previously held a retirement visa for 4 years in a row before applying.

Foreign investor and high-level employee Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP)

As we mentioned earlier, although the KITAS is relatively convenient, having to renew it every year is time consuming and mildly irritating.

The good news is that if you have worked in Indonesia for the last 4 years in a row, consistently had a work permit (IMTA) and held the job position of Director or Commissioner throughout that time (at the same company); then you are entitled to apply for the KITAP.

Obviously, you will be required to provide all supporting paperwork, but once everything is submitted and processed, you can sit back, relax and spend your time focusing on the things that are important to you.
